商品の紹介
| Charlie Poole was one of the first great wild men of country music, years before anyone was even calling it that. Poole was a singer and banjo player from Spray, NC, who had a then-unique three-finger picking style that was a precursor to the bluegrass style Earl Scruggs would develop years later. Poole and his combo the North Carolina Ramblers landed a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1925, and their first release, "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down," became a smash, selling over 100,00 copies at a time when a "down-home" record that sold 10,000 copies was a major hit. Poole was a larger-than-life figure who wove a bizarre humorous thread into many of his songs (even though he didn't write music himself) and moved back and forth between sentimental songs of family life and rough-hewn numbers in which he celebrated booze, women, and rambling free. The wild life Poole sang about was a close approximation of the life he truly led; he bought his first good banjo with money he made bootlegging whiskey, his long-suffering wife once said he never seemed to stay in one place for more than a month, and he was given to drinking binges that would last for weeks at a time, one of which led to his death in 1931. Loudon Wainwright III has been a fan of Charlie Poole's music since the early '70s, and with the help of producer Dick Connette and a handful of talented friends and relatives, he's crafted a remarkable tribute to Poole with High Wide & Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project. While most of the songs on this two-disc set were recorded by Poole during his heyday, Wainwright has also included a few originals, which either speak on Poole's behalf or fill us in on some of the details of his life. It's not hard to see what drew Wainwright to the more sardonic material in Poole's repertoire; they share a love of barbed humor, cheerful cynicism, intricate wordplay, and tales of epic-scale drinking, and Wainwright wouldn't have had much trouble passing off songs like "The Old Ballyhoo," "Ramblin' Blues," and "Awful Hungry Hash House" as his own work in his earlier days. But Poole made his living playing for all sorts of people, often busking on the streets, and Wainwright honors the side of Poole that played what the paying audience wanted to hear and played it well; he's willing and able to tap into the emotionally manipulative core of tunes like "My Mother and My Sweetheart," "Old and Only in the Way," and "The Letter That Never Came" and find an emotional truth in them that demonstrates why they endure. (Wainwright does even greater magic with a handful of Southern gospel numbers, which, given his well-documented distrust of organized religion, is all the more impressive.) And though Wainwright clearly admires Poole the artist, he harbors no illusions about the man -- "Way Up in NYC" and the title cut pay homage to his wild and rowdy ways, but "Charlie's Last Song" offers a sobering look at where it all led, and "The Man in the Moon," written from the perspective of Poole's wife and sung by Maggie Roche, imagines how maddening it must have been to have someone like him in your life. Maggie Roche's sisters, Terre and Suzzy, also lend their splendid voices to these recordings, as do Loudon's children Martha, Sloan, and Rufus Wainwright, and the instrumentalists approach this material with skill and imagination, sometimes conjuring the style of the original Poole recordings, but also finding room for interpretations that take these songs into fresh and unexpected places. It would have been easy for Loudon Wainwright III to knock off ten or twelve songs that Poole popularized, and it surely would have made for an entertaining album, but he reaches for something grander and more complicated with High Wide & Handsome, and the result is something very special, a portrait of a man and his music in which the biography emboldens the art and vice versa. [The package also includes an extensive booklet featuring song lyrics, no to be continued... |
