| When the Crowns morphed into the Drifters in 1958, a pop legacy was born. The Drifters had several innovative and classic hits in the late '50s and early '60s, many of them featuring the lead vocals of Ben E. King, and this fun set covers the first two years -- 1958 to 1960 -- of the Drifters' commercial run, as well as including solo work from King released during the same time period. That means a lot of good stuff, including Drifters classics like “There Goes My Baby,” “This Magic Moment,” and “Save the Last Dance for Me,” and solo sides from King like “Spanish Harlem” and his duet with LaVern Baker on “A Help-Each-Other Romance.” What you don’t get is King's biggest hit. “Stand by Me” wouldn’t appear until the next year in 1961 and thus falls just outside the circle of this set. ~ Steve Leggett |
