| Hell on Heels -- the debut from Pistol Annies, the trio of Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley -- arrived in the waning days the summer of 2011, just months before the release of Four the Record, Lamberts fourth album. Four the Record garnered the attention and airplay, but Hell on Heels had longer legs, helping to shape the sound and direction of country music in the 2010s. Thats a lot of baggage to put on a record as modest as Hell on Heels, but its sense of sisterhood was its strength and ultimately the key to its endurance. Upon its release, only Lambert was a solo star -- Presley had yet to release an album and Monroes career was off to a shaky start -- but Miranda didnt dominate the trio. Pistol Annies celebrated the common ground shared by three distinct voices, voices that shared a sensibility but were complementary. Lamberts swagger is offset by Monroes sweetness and Presley lends an underpinning of grit, the three combining to write songs rich in empathy and humor. While Pistol Annies dont kick up a lot of dust on Hell on Heels -- Takin Pills bounces to a snapping twang, The Hunters Wife swings to a Texas two-step -- its controlled quietness feels defiant, drawing attention to the sturdiness of the songs and the flintiness of the performances. At their core, the trio is a songwriters collective, alternating and collaborating on new songs, but Pistol Annies is also a band, gaining power by how their singing and tunes harmonize. Subsequent albums sharpened the trios collective and individual voices, but Hell on Heels has its own earthy elegance, a spirit and sound that echoed throughout the 2010s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |

| Relieving the pressure of delivering her eagerly awaited fourth album, Miranda Lambert formed the Pistol Annies with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley, two similarly minded singer/songwriters whose profile doesn’t come close to matching hers. Lambert may be the star, but she’s not the leader in Pistol Annies, who are a remarkably democratic supergroup, sharing leads and writing songs where the spotlight shifts from one singer to another. Often, the group’s spare, simple arrangements, acoustic underpinning, and wry wit recall the Dixie Chicks, but the Pistol Annies sensibilities are more straightforward than the Chicks; they don’t bend genres or delve into bluegrass, and the focus remains on the song. And Hell on Heels, their quickly recorded and released 2011 debut appearing just months before Lamberts Four the Record, is filled with excellent songs, tunes that aren’t flashy but are deceptive, built on strong bones, and delivered with a clever flair. There’s a lightness to Hell on Heels that wasn’t apparent on Revolution - it’s clear that collaboration has liberated Lambert, she’s not having to deal with the expectations of a major artist, but rather gets to cut loose and have fun, something that winds up reaffirming her status as a major artist. She tosses off songs with casual confidence while introducing the larger world to two fine singer/songwriters in Monroe and Presley. Miranda’s career will certainly thrive, and Ashley and Angaleena may go on to their own success, but with any luck, Pistol Annies is not a one-off for the trio, but rather a regular gig: this is too much pure fun to not repeat. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |
