| In 2013, the U.K.-based Expansion label -- one of the better, more caring R&B reissue specialists -- released a pair of two-for-one Dayton discs. This one combines the Dayton, Ohio funk group's first two albums: Dayton (United Artists, 1980) and Cutie Pie (Liberty, 1981). Neither album spawned a big single, but there's a fair quantity of sophisticated Ohio funk between the two sets, including the excellent, should-have-been-major "Eyes on You," as well as "Tonight," "Cutie Pie," (featuring synthesizer from Faze-O and Heatwave's Keith Harrison, and not to be confused by One Way's 1982 hit of the same title), and "Body Shaker." ~ Andy Kellman| |
