| The Ipecac-issued debut album from the outlier indie rock quartet featuring the Melvins' Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover, At the Drive-In's Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, and Le Butcherettes' Teri Gender Bender, Crystal Fairy delivers a surreal blast of sonic pugilism that pairs psych-tinged, stentorian stoner metal with snarling art-punk. True to its members' pedigrees -- and in a rare bit of kismet -- the 11-track set more than lives up to the hyperbolic notion of a supergroup, employing a lethal aural assault that marches to beats both familiar and phantasmagoric. Teri Gender Bender (real name Teresa Suarez) proves once again that she's one of the most versatile vocalists in the heavy music scene, deftly weaving in and out of octaves like a Ducati during rush hour on a four-lane highway -- the aptly named "Drug on the Bus" is a particular tour de force. The band proves adept at switching in and out of gear as well, mercilessly pounding the pavement on propulsive haymakers like "Chiseler" and "Vampire X-Mass," while finding just enough restraint on the more midtempo offerings ("Moth Tongue," "Necklace of Divorce") to allow TGB to drive the nail in. Elsewhere, Osborne shares the lead on a nerved-up cover of cult Sacramento punk unit Tales of Terror's "Possession," and the band goes full-on, trippy early Jane's Addiction-inspired psych-metal on the cacophonous "Bent Teeth." The ballsy, groove-laden title track plays to each of the members' strengths, with every piston pumping and cog locking in, sounding for all the world like Sabotage-era Sabbath fronted by Danielle Dax. It's impressive stuff, and that it feels like the work of a much more seasoned crew of bandmates suggests that they had as much fun making it as the listener will have devouring it. ~ James Christopher Monger |

| メルヴィンズのバズ・オズボーンとデイル・クローヴァー、レ・ブチェレッツのフロントウーマン、テリー・ジェンダー・ベンダー、そしてアット・ザ・ドライヴインのオマー・ロドリゲス・ロペスによって結成された新プロジェクト、クリスタル・フェアリーが、セルフ・タイトル・デビュー・アルバムをリリースする! 今回のバンドは、レ・ブチェレッツとメルヴィンズがツアーを一緒に行なった際、ビキニ・キルのカヴァー曲「Rebel Girl」を毎晩演奏したことがきっかけとなって結成された。この経緯についてドラマーのデイル・クローヴァーは話す。「『Rebel Girl』は毎回ショーのハイライトだった。それでパフォーマンスの度に我々には特別な化学反応があることに気づいて、それをもう少し追求したいと感じたんだ。テリーともオマーともすごく親しくなったから、それでみんなで新しいバンドをスタートすることになった」。一方のテリー・ジェンダー・ベンダーは、「メルヴィンズとまわっていたツアーにメルヴィンズ・ファンであるオマーが顔を出すようになった。そのうち、メルヴィンズとオマーも親しくなって、いつかみんなで一緒に何かを作り上げられたらって憧れを抱いたりしていたのよ。そしたらいつの間にかともに曲を書き始めて、気づいたらスタジオで素晴らしい作品を誕生させていたの!私はこのプロジェクトの一員になることができてすごく光栄に思っているわ」と語った。そしてバズ・オズボーンが加えた。「メルヴィンズはこれまでに様々なライナップを経験してきたし、今後もそれは続くと思う。しかし、テリーとオマーらと結成したクリスタル・フェアリーは何かが違うと感じている。このバンドは独自のアイデンティティを持ち続けるべきなんだよ」。 サイケデリックでサイコで危険で物珍しい作品が登場。テリーが歌い、ギターとキーボーをプレイ。オマーはベース、バズもギター、そしてデイルはドラムをそれぞれプレイする。シンプルでありながらガッシリしており、完璧である。4人あわせると150年におよぶ音楽経験、4万枚を超える作品に値するだろう。とにかく凄まじい。それでいて、クリスタル・フェアリーは異質だ。特別であり、この4人の新たな側面というのを表している。パンク、メタル、サイコ・ロック、狂気的でリズミカルな興奮、これらが見事に混ざり合った音楽がここに完成している。 |

| This debut album is the work of a veritable indie rock supergroup, possibly named after the 2013 Chilean comedy-adventure film starring Michael Cera. Featuring members of the Melvins (Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover) and At the Drive-In (Omar Rodriguez-Lopez), Crystal Fairy are closer in tone to the former band than the latter, featuring sludgy riffing, thunderous drums, and a faintly psychedelic feel enhanced by the surreal lyrics and swooping, sneering vocals of Le Butcherettes' Teri Gender Bender, who comes off sounding a bit like a punk Kate Bush. ~ John D.
