| The fifth volume of Ace's ongoing Masterpieces of Modern Soul series -- a succession of compilations concentrating on the smooth soul of the 1970s, the R&B that walked the satin-draped line separating funk and disco -- collects 24 tracks from the era, tracks that were scattered across 45s, CD bonus tracks, abandoned in the vaults, or edited for this compilation. There are a few recognizable names here -- Eddie Floyd, Major Lance, Loleatta Holloway, and Millie Jackson all have a cut -- but save for Jackson, they're all navigating shifting fashions, so they don't sound markedly different from the singers and groups populating the rest of the disc. Much of that is due to how all of this soul is about the production and vibe; the singers are submerged underneath strings and woodwinds, elegantly funky guitars and lithe rhythms. Cut for cut, there are plenty of alluring grooves and textures, and the whole collection does have a certain sophisticated strut that is appealing, either as a soundtrack to a party or as a soulful background listen. That said, it's the kind of collection that's for the dedicated who appreciate intricacies in performance and production more than a memorable song.
