| Before Guillaume de Machaut composed his Messe de Nostre Dame, which is widely considered the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Latin mass, many mass movements and other liturgical pieces were gathered from different sources and simply compiled into manuscript books, regardless of authorship. The two such assembled works on this Evidence recording are referred to as the Messe de Barcelone (Barcelone-Bbc, ms. 971) and the Messe dApt (Apt-tresor, ms. 16bis), indicating the cities where the manuscripts reside, though both seem to have been used by the Avignon papacy at the dawn of the 14th century. Most of the movements are anonymous, except for pieces by Philippe de Vitry and Johannes Tapissier, who are well-documented composers; the names Sortes and Depansis are also given, though nothing is known about them. These performances by Dominique Vellard and his Ensemble Gilles Binchois may remind listeners of their beautiful 1999 recording of Machauts Messe de Nostre Dame, so similar are the balance and timbres of the voices and the skillful rhythmic coordination of parts, as well as the harmonies and polyphonic style characteristic of the budding Ars nova movement. The recording is clear and close-up, and the 3- and 4-part textures are utterly transparent. |
