商品の紹介
"Horn Rock" is one of the most curious subgenres of classic rock music. The enduring popularity of its two major players, Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears, suggests that the jazzy hybrid of pop, soul, and rock had a shallow pool, yet the brevity of the phenomenon -- it launched in 1968 with the release of the debut from BS&T and was essentially finished by 1974 -- suggests that it was a fad, an assessment that contradicts the longevity of its standard bearers. BGP/Ace's 2019 collection Horn Rock & Funky Guitar Grooves 1968-1974 explores the subgenre's glory days, tipping toward the Blood, Sweat & Tears end of the scale thanks to the inclusion of their 1973 flop "Roller Coaster" and "Toe Hold," a 1969 tune from their early mastermind Al Kooper. Due to either licensing or aesthetics, there is no Chicago here, and they're not missed. The featured artists veer toward the muscularly soulful, whether they're following the expansive, improvisatory lead of early BS&T or the soulful punch of Delaney & Bonnie. The interesting thing about Horn Rock is how all 17 of the featured acts mine the same ground, and find their own distinct sound. Lighthouse is tightly controlled and frenetically funky on "One Fine Morning," Tower of Power eases into a sunshine groove on "Clever Girl," the Sons stretch out for an exploratory ten minutes on "Boomp, Boomp, Chomp," Hammer ratchet up Latin rhythms on "Tuane," Tobias Wood Henderson gets slick and funky on "Gypsy Boy II," and Chase strikes a blend of lite AM pop melody and FM rock arrangements on "Run Back to Mama." Everything is redolent of its era, largely because these six years are the only time horn rock was an active part of the pop/rock landscape, but this isn't just worthy as a time capsule -- it shows that this was a remarkably inventive little scene. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |
