| A collection of highlights from the groups 40th Anniversary tour, a shindig that happened in America and Europe throughout 2019 as they supported their reunion album 40, Rocked This Town: From LA to London showcases a bunch of old cats who still get a kick from playing the old tunes in an old-fashioned way. Save for a little wear and tear on Brian Setzers voice -- when the album kicks off with Cat Fight (Over a Dog Like Me), hes operating at a gravelly rumble -- the Stray Cats dont precisely sound as if theyre middle-aged men, save for their taste for rock & roll made the year of their birth. Whether theyre playing their old hits, some covers (Cannonball Rag, Misirlou, which comes with a shoutout to the then-recently passed Dick Dale) or new tunes, the trio not only sound spry and engaged, but like they never took an extended hiatus. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |
