| ZAYN(ゼイン)通算3枚目のニュー・アルバム『Nobody is Listening』 カリード、シド(ジ・インターネット)等の豪華ゲストも参加! 2015年にワン・ダイレクションを突如脱退し、翌年に発表したシングル「ピロウトーク」、アルバム『マインド・オブ・マイン』がいずれも全米・全英1位を獲得し、アルバムではイギリス出身男性ソロ・アーティストとして史上初の快挙という記録と共に華々しいデビューを飾ったゼイン。その後もテイラー・スウィフト、シーア、クリス・ブラウンといった数々の豪華アーティストと共演も果たし、 2018年12月には2ndアルバムにして2枚組の超大作『イカロス・フォールズ』をリリース - 2019年にはディズニー映画『アラジン』にてジャヴァイア・ワードとコラボ/カヴァーした名曲「ホール・ニュー・ワールド」がエンドソングに起用されるなど、着実に人気・実力ともに成長を遂げてきた。通算3枚目となる今作『Nobody is Listening|ノーバディ・イズ・リスニング』には、カリードやシド(ジ・インターネット)らも参加。 シングル「ベター」を筆頭に、全体を通して暖かなギターの響きがリードするアレンジメントを様々な趣向で試みた、タイムレスなサウンドに仕上がっている。またこれまで同様、ゼイン自身が歌詞を含め全曲の制作に携わっていると同時に、チャーリー・ハンサム(トラヴィス・スコット/カニエ・ウェスト他)、スクリブズ・ライリー(カーディ・B/カリード他)、ロジェ・チャハエド(トラヴィス・スコット/ドージャ・キャット他)やソルトワイヴス(チャーリーXCX他)など、各曲ごとにプロデューサー/共作者を入れ替えており、まだ実績があまりない新進ミュージシャンも多く起用。無名有名問わずゼインの思い描く世界観を具現化できるスタッフを厳選するなど各曲への強いこだわりと想いが詰まった作品であることが伺える。昨年9月にモデルのジジ・ハディッドとの間に第一子となる愛娘が誕生し、父親としての人生を歩みはじめたばかりのゼイン。公私ともに成長し続ける中、世の中で起きていることから自分を切り離し、淡々と音楽と向き合い心の声にだけ耳を傾けて作り上げた1枚 - 彼にしか描くことのできないこの作品は必聴だ。 |

| Following the bloat of 2018s double-album Icarus Falls, crooning English loverman Zayn scales things back for his third set, Nobody Is Listening. This time around, hes a new dad, partnered-up, and nearing the ripe age of 30. His music takes a logical turn with this growth, showing the singer/songwriters vulnerable side and moving closer toward heartfelt love songs instead of exaggerated playboy fantasies. Thats not to say the album is void of steamy sensuality or lip-biting sex romps (Sweat and Windowsill really get the blood flowing); rather, they simply become one of the facets of a well-rounded relationship, one that even finds Zayn fantasizing about wedded bliss (Yeah, you could be my wife for real/Only takes a woman to show what it means to love on When Loves Around). His tightest, most mature album to date, Nobody Is Listening benefits from both the sonic and thematic focus, even if some of the songs bleed together or stick to the same mood. Although Better and Vibez were the albums lead singles, the aforementioned Sweat and Windowsill offer the most radio-ready moments of pop excitement, with the former recalling the Weeknds synth hedonism and the latter transporting listeners away on a hazy cloud reminiscent of Post Malone. Touches of DAngelo, John Legend, and Khalid (who co-penned Outside) also drift in and out of these 11 tracks, reminders of Zayns vocal prowess and ability to nail multiple styles. Even though the album isnt as immediate as his prior work, it rewards repeated listens and some concentration, a smooth experience fit for wasting a day away between the sheets. ~ Neil Z. Yeung |
