| On July 29, 1973, Led Zeppelin concluded an extensive North American tour with an engagement at New Yorks Madison Square Garden. The last night of that engagement is heard on this double-CD bootleg, which an obscure bootlegger calling itself Soul Productions put out in the 1990s. Although Soul describes Madison Square Garden, 1973 as a stereo soundboard recording, the sound quality isnt perfect -- its decent and better than a lot of 1970s bootlegs, but not overly sharp and not audiophile quality. Possibly, Soul made this bootleg from a copy of a tape rather than the master recording. Zeppelins performance, however, is generally excellent, and the band brings a lot of passion to Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, Over the Hills and Far Away, The Rain Song, and the opener Rock & Roll. Some of the songs become vehicles for extended blowing and jamming, especially a 25-minute, long-winded Dazed and Confused and a 13-minute performance of the eerie No Quarter. Not for the casual listener, Madison Square Garden, 1973 is a bootleg that despite its imperfections, will appeal to collectors and hardcore fans if theyre able to track down a copy. ~ Alex Henderson |
