商品の紹介
As half of the band Omni, Philip Frobos helps write and play some of the best post-punk of their era. Jumpy, hooky, and consistently surprising, the groups records are positively essential for anyone hip to that retro sound. On his own, Frobos proves compelling on much more relaxed terms. Written as a companion piece to his coming-of-age novel of the same name, Vague Enough to Satisfy features the bassist doing some serious home cooking. The album sounds like it was written in a tiny bedroom late at night, with the sound turned down low so it wont bother his housemates. Tinny drum machines and cheapo keyboards provide much of the backing, along with some fractured guitar lines and eccentric bass lines, as Frobos croons along quietly but firmly. Quite a few of the songs sound like they could be Omni tracks given a rhythmic boost -- the pulsing Vacant Street has nicely twanging guitar and insistent vocals, Never Noticed waltzes woozily like a tipsy couple, and Pathetic has one of the albums strongest hooks. No Packages Today would have been one of the bands best if he had socked it away. Along with these quirky little songs that sound like they were written and recorded at the same time are a few instrumental snippets that sound like the score to a movie shot on a sub-shoestring budget. Its all pleasantly ramshackle, and Frobos gift for composing sticky melodies makes even the more insubstantial songs feel important. Would the record be better if he had put more time and polish into it? Possibly. Would it have worked better as a straight soundtrack, focusing on the instrumentals like Pool Disturbance, which sounds like it was lifted from the jitteriest film noir ever? Maybe. Whatever Vague Enough to Satisfy is in the end, giving it a few spins might result in some good feelings and at the very least will tide fans over until the next Omni album arrives. ~ Tim Sendra |
