| Unreleased is not, as one might think, an anthology of Cecilia Bartoli recordings that never saw the light of day, but rather an entire unreleased album. It was recorded in 2013, featuring Classical-period dramatic arias by Beethoven, Josef Myslive?ek, Mozart, and Haydn, all written for leading divas of the day. The concept fits Bartoli well, and there doesnt seem to be any word available on why the album went unreleased after the time and expense of recording one of the worlds leading singers. PR text indicates that Bartoli took the opportunity of pandemic isolation to go through files of unreleased material, so maybe there is more from where this came. In any event, she was in fine voice. The best is presented right up front, in Bartolis reading of Beethovens Ah! Perfido, Op. 65, a lively showpiece in which Bartoli displays all the shades of her voice and is aided by an energetic performance from the Basel Kammerorchester under conductor Muhai Tang. The rest is a rather miscellaneous collection of mostly little-known works, which may have been part of the reason the album was shelved. Two of the Mozart operas feature attractive turns by Maxim Vengerov on obbligato violin parts, and another draw is an aria from Myslive?eks La clemenza di Tito opera. Nothing quite catches fire except the Beethoven, perhaps because the famous singers of the Classical period were not larger-than-life figures in the way those of the Baroque were, but Bartoli fans will find numerous good additions to their collections here. |
