| With this recording, the Naive labels Vivaldi Edition, exploring a giant cache of lost Vivaldi works, reaches its 68th volume. The series has been of top quality in every way: in the music itself, in the singing and playing, and not least in the graphics. Cantate per Soprano I is novel in several ways. It features a soprano, Arianna Vendittelli, who has appeared on a couple of opera recordings but is fairly new to the series, and it explores a genre, the secular cantata, which represents one of the more neglected aspects of Vivaldis vast output. These are small works, for one singer and a continuo ensemble, with simple texts in which shepherds and shepherdesses lay the big romantic hurt on their significant others. There are one or two arias and recitatives, oddly with the recitatives sometimes coming last. Venditellis medium-sized voice, without deep dramatic qualities but pleasingly agile, is perfect for these, and shes aided in major ways by the continuo group with the extremely lively harpsichord of Andrea Buccarella. One can hear Bach in some of these pieces, or perhaps its simply that the pastoral tinge in some Bach cantatas owed something to Vivaldi; consider the final aria of Tra lerbe i zeffiri, RV 669. The sound from the Sala Ghislieri in Mondovi, Italy, a former church, is a bit more ponderous than it needs to be but is clear enough. One awaits further entries in what could become a substantial series; Vivaldi wrote 30 of these works in all, of which only six are presented here. |
