| Fresh on the heels of the second release in its successful survey of Mendelssohns string quartets, the Doric String Quartet teams with violist Timothy Ridout to tackle Mendelssohns string quintets. Compared to the vast expanse of repertoire available for string quartet, music for string quintet (be it with an additional viola, cello, or double bass) is relatively limited. Among these, several composers works are performed with some regularity, and two of them are by Mendelssohn. The readings here from the Doric Quartet and Ridout will do much to offer support as to why. Mostly written in 1826, early in what many believe to be the beginning of his mature period, the String Quintet No. 1 in A major, Op. 18, was taken up shortly after the composer finished his Octet, Op. 20, but was left unpublished until 1832. Following the death of Mendelssohns friend and dedicatee of the Octet, Eduard Rietz, Mendelssohn discarded the original second movement Minuet and replaced it with the published Intermezzo dedicated to Rietz. Mendelssohn returned to the quintet medium in 1845, penning the String Quintet No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 87. The composer was a constant tinkerer who was seemingly never satisfied with what he wrote, and the work went unpublished until 1851, four years after his death. Julius Rietz, the younger brother of Eduard, stepped in after Mendelssohns death and edited the work for publication. Whether or not Mendelssohn wouldve agreed with the decisions made, this is an exciting work with lots of emotional range captured well by the players. For an example, listen to the growing crescendo in the third movement, Adagio e lento, before its graceful, calm conclusion. An enjoyable hour of music recorded well at Potton Hall in Suffolk. |
