| British duo piri & tommy began making music together soon after they met through Instagram and started dating in 2021, and by the end of the year, they scored a viral hit on TikTok with "soft spot," an infectious pop tune set to a liquid drumnbass rhythm. The pair continued channeling turn-of-the-millenium U.K. garage and atmospheric dnb on several further singles, then released the low-key mixtape froge.mp3 in October of 2022. While mining much of the same territory as PinkPantheress debut mixtape from a year earlier (right down to the spirited "yeah!" ad-libs), piri & tommy have a more Ibiza-friendly sound, with tracks like "beachin" applying atmospheric guitars to deep, rolling grooves. Any of these tracks would sound perfect at a beach rave, but the lyrics and hooks stick with you, and they stand up to repeated home listens. Breakthrough hit "soft spot" breezily captures the moment when one falls in love with another, while "words" and "say it" address social anxiety and communication troubles. Fresh, vibrant, and deeper than it might seem on the surface, froge.mp3 is a gem. ~ Paul Simpson |
