| On every Me Lost Me release, Jayne Dent contrasts and connects folk and electronic music more inventively, and RPG is no exception. Though her previous releases were inspired by real-life locales, for her third album she looked to virtual sources. Drawing from the immersive world-building and imaginary landscapes of video games -- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was one of her favorites to play during the COVID-19 global pandemic -- she levels up her commitment to expanding folks storytelling and engagement with contemporary culture. Even more so than on Arcana and The Good Noise, Dent melds electronics into her music seamlessly on RPG. Hypnotic loops connect with stark and droning melodies descended from British folk, heightening the uncanniness of the realms within her songs. The sleek meta-prologue "Real World" draws listeners in by questioning real-life moments that "feel like a video game." On "Side Quest," an idly strummed harp glitches into pixels. Dents voice is just as versatile, tapping into tradition with a choral arrangement of the 13th century song "Mirie It Is Summer While I Last." Its timeless feel extends to "The Oldest Tree Holds the Earth," which only sounds like it could be hundreds of years old thanks to its round-like structure, ringing melody, and timeless questions ("does the sound of the sea calm these trees as much as it calms me?"). Dents melisma feels as flexible as the tones around her on "Collide," where her wordless vocalizations charm Faye MacCalmans clarinet into labyrinthine shapes. Me Lost Mes radical combinations of old and new could sound muddled, but theres a folk purity in the clarity with which Dent expresses herself. She conjures the midsummer rituals of a futuristic pagan society on the standouts "Festive Day" and "Heat!" and envisions insomnia as a shared "time loop purgatory" filled with malware on "The God of Stuck Time." The albums "infinite landscapes" are richest when Dent ties them to real feelings and epiphanies. The serene hum of nature in harmony leads her to realize that "the care I neglect so often is mine" on "In Gardens," while "Science and Art" is a glowing love song to the creative instinct and humanitys undying need to express itself, whether in a song or video game. On RPG, Me Lost Me continues that tradition brilliantly. ~ Heather Phares |
