| Ana Roxanne and DJ Python first met in 2020, and gradually worked on music together throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and in between international touring once the world opened back up again. Any time they found themselves in the same city, theyd reconvene and develop ideas in a studio together. Their self-titled debut as Natural Wonder Beauty Concept bears hardly any resemblance to Roxannes intimate, R&B-influenced ambient or Pythons signature fusion of deep house and reggaeton. Instead, its a curious and exploratory album that incorporates ever-mutating electronic beats, abstract neo-classical interludes, and cloudlike atmospheric textures. The glitchy rhythm of "Sword" breaks down into a static-filled crawl and everything (including the pitch of Roxannes voice) becomes slow and sluggish, as if they both took a sedative and it kicked in at the same moment. "III" is a duet between both artists, and Python comes close to Yung Lean or Bladee territory with his yearning, emo-ish voice and lyrics about all-consuming numbness. The title track (gaining the duo entry into the eponymous artist/album/song trifecta club, along with Black Sabbath and Bad Company) is a truly sublime atmospheric jungle tune, with Roxannes blissful vocals riding waves of thundering breakbeats. "Driving" combines sporadic thumps and an aquatic flow of gentle synths with Roxannes patiently paced, half-spoken reflections on solitude. The deeply melancholy "Clear" expresses a moment of extreme vulnerability to the point of being driven to tears, with the sound of actual crying emerging throughout the persistently ticking beats and glowing synths. "World Freehand Circle Drawing" feels like a sort of emotional cleanse at the end of the album, with Roxannes clear, upfront vocals shining out over a blippy, lo-bit pulse. Natural Wonder Beauty Concept is a strange, sometimes unsettling record that attempts to make sense of displacement and detachment, and its most effective when it also provides a sense of comfort and reassurance. ~ Paul Simpson |

| Ana RoxanneとDJ Pythonによるプロジェクト、「Natural Wonder Beauty Concept」。 Mexican Summerよりセルフタイトルのデビュー・アルバムを発表。 Ana RoxanneとDJ Python(Brian Pineyro)による、Natural Wonder Beauty Conceptは、セルフタイトルのデビューLP『Natural Wonder Beauty Concept』をMexican Summerからリリースする。 このプロジェクトは、SeefeelやBoards Of Canadaのようで、ジャングルや風変わりなアンビエントを思わせる、 ドリーミーで緻密なドラムプログラミングと雰囲気を持ったサウンドを鳴らし、二人の優秀なアーティストが一つになるとどうなるかを教えてくれる。 「このプロジェクトは、私たちに自由な創造的ライセンスを与えてくれた。感じたことや影響を受けたことなど、何でも試してみる機会だった」と二人は語る。 BrianとAnaは、各々絶賛されたアルバムをリリースした後、2020年の冬にニューヨークで出会った。 しかし、パンデミックの為、アルバムが現実の世界でどのような意味を持つかはまだ見えてなかった。 何年もオンライン上で互いの作品を賞賛してきた2人は、Roxanneがニューヨーク移った後、ついに同じ街で再会した。 郊外をドライブしながら、Bjorkの『Telegram』、HTRK、Portisheadなど、メランコリーなアコースティック曲を聴き、2人の間に静かな理解が生まれた。 やがて、スタジオでの実験が、より友情を深めることとなった。世界が動き出すと、2人は離れて、あちこちで散発的にセッションを行いながらツアーを行った。 そして、再びニューヨークで再会し、エンジニア/プロデューサーのAl Carlson(Oneohtrix Point Never、Jessica Pratt)と共に作品を完成させた。 |
