| Some people start bands just to have fun and often end up enjoying their music more than anyone in the audience. Who Is She? is a notable exception: these women clearly love coming up with sharp, funny, and pithy observations about the world around them and the city they call home (in this case, Seattle) and putting them to simple but thoroughly engaging pop-punk melodies played with a shaky, palpable energy. Its all but impossible not to love what theyre doing, in part because they so clearly love doing it and also because it happens to work, and Who Is She?s second album, 2023s Goddess Energy, is a short but sweet visit to their world of elemental guitars and breathy harmonies. Something of a Pacific Northwest supergroup, Who Is She? features Robin Edwards of Lisa Prank on lead vocals and guitar; Bree McKenna of Tacocat on bass and harmonies; Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt on drums, keyboards, and harmonies; and Emily Nokes of Tacocat on additional vocals. If youre familiar with any of their main bands, you likely have an excellent idea of how this sounds, and thats not bad at all. Given their schedules, the musicians clearly didnt spend the six years between their first and second albums rigorously rehearsing these songs, and that works in its favor: tight performances of these songs would squeeze the life out of them, and as they sing of their doomed romance with MoviePass, why we should be nicer to Anne Hathaway, the abundant creeps on dating sites, their still-living sea monkeys, and why Thursday is underrated, only a soulless scold would not want to dance and sing along to the pop-loving energy and slightly rough edges. And if this doesnt have a hometown anthem as good as "Seattle Freeze" from the debut, their rewrite of Le Tigres "My My Metrocard" as "My My Orca Card" drips with civic pride and well-focused snark against some local billionaires. In a better world, Who Is She? would be superstars who could crank out a record like this once a year, but they probably wouldnt enjoy it as much, and Goddess Energy is a punk rock gift to be cherished, no matter how often they stop by the party. ~ Mark Deming |
