| Anja Huwe was the leader of influential post-punk/goth group Xmal Deutschland for the entirety of the 1980s, and has since become a noted visual artist, as well as a television producer. Huwes longtime friend Mona Mur encouraged her to start making music again, and the two worked together in Murs Berlin studio for a year and a half. Codes, issued in 2024 by Sacred Bones, which simultaneously released a compilation of Xmal Deutschlands early singles, reflects on Huwes past and everything shes been through during her career and personal life. She expresses no regrets during the slow, cabaret-tinged sway of opener "Skuggomas," and opens the more electro-industrial "Pariah" with a statement about her lifes evolution: "I changed myself into myself." Former Xmal bandmate Manuela Rickers contributes guitars throughout, with "Rabenschwarz" flashing back to the groups vintage sound, but adding an extra layer of industrial metal toughness, with crunchier riffs and hard-charging drums. "Exit" is more of a downtempo wasteland crawl, while "O Wald" is a synth pop gem with uplifting yet bittersweet synth pulsations. "Sleep With One Eye Open" intriguingly has a post-dubstep bounce to its lilting rhythm and bubbling guitars, momentarily set free for a brief moment near the end. The gentle, nearly lullaby-like "Hideaway" has gentle guitars and twinkling pianos, and quotes Robert Frost with hopeful lyrics about continuing the journey. Arriving decades after Huwe last took the stage, Codes brings her musical career up to date, touching on several directions she might have explored if shed kept making music during that time, while looking back on her life experiences. ~ Paul Simpson |
