| The tenure of conductor Edward Gardner at the Bergen Philharmonic has produced very good recordings of Scandinavian music, and one is tempted to say he beats the Scandinavians at their own game. Listeners can make up their own minds about that, but this album, the second in a series devoted to Carl Nielsen by these forces, is very strong by anyones standards. The Bergen Philharmonic is a fine ensemble, but Gardner seems to have a way of getting it to punch above its weight, with the shifting orchestral textures of the Symphony No. 3 ("Sinfonia Espansiva") honed to a level of fine detail. Moreover, Gardner characterizes each work deeply. The mysterious little tone poem Pan and Syrinx will linger in the mind long after the piece has finished (and wouldnt this work make a fascinating pairing in concert with Debussys flute solo Syrinx?) and the uneasy modernistic influences of the Flute Concerto, with an assist from the angular playing of Adam Walker, come through beautifully. The work sets crunching, fairly dissonant orchestral passages against more lyrical flute lines across its two movements. The Sinfonia Espansiva is quite a ride, with excellent work from soprano Lina Johnson and baritone Yngve Soberg in its entrancing second-movement wordless duet and a truly blazing finale. It is one of the finest recordings of the work available, with superb engineering from Chandos at the Grieghallen in Bergen, a place the labels staff is coming to know well.
