| As a sort-of follow-up to Jazz Goes To College (which was actually recorded three years earlier) and the final album in his "college" series, pianist Dave Brubeck and his Quartet (with altoist Paul Desmond, bassist Norman Bates and drummer Joe Morello) recorded at Fullerton Junior College in 1957. The musicians were clearly inspired by the enthusiastic audience and they perform the definitive version of Brubeck's "One Moment Worth Years," dig into the lengthy "Bru's Blues" and play fresh versions of three standards that were in their repertoire throughout the 1950's: "These Foolish Things," "St. Louis Blues" and "The Masquerade Is Over." Most Dave Brubeck records are well worth acquiring, particularly concert albums, so it seems odd that this frequently superb outing has not yet been reissued in full on CD. ~ Scott Yanow |
