| The idea of an album of vocal and chamber works by Kaikhosru Sorabji might seem to miss the point of this composer, who is known for piano works on a grand scale, and indeed, most of the music here is receiving world premiere performances. Yet those already intrigued by Sorabji are likely to enjoy these works, which are of a piece with his piano music, not an odd sideline like, say, Donizettis instrumental music. For one thing, where there is a piano present (played by the excellent Chappell Kingsland, who also wrote the informative annotations), it tends to have Sorabjis characteristic virtuosity. Sample the Trois poemes for soprano and piano (1941) on texts by Paul Verlaine and Charles Baudelaire, where the combination of vocal line and athletic accompaniment produces a unique effect. The performers on the album are quite strong overall, but soprano Zoe Spangler is a standout; she cultivates a woodwind-like vocal sonority that stands up to Kingslands swirling piano. The pieces without piano, featuring the Wild Beautiful Orchestra and smaller Wild Beautiful Ensemble (the names are somehow apropos here), have similar textures. Sample the Cinque Sonetti di Michelangelo Buonarroti for baritone and chamber orchestra, where the entry of the vocal line gives the sensation of walking into a shadowy hallway. The final Movement is a good vocalise for those seeking an alternative to Rachmaninovs famous piece. BIS church and college auditorium acoustic environments here arent ideal. The engineers seem to be trying to add mystery to music that can provide that on its own, but Sorabji lovers will likely be delighted with this release. ~ James Manheim |
