| The dark cast of Smetanas Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 15, is attributed to the death of the composers four-year-old daughter shortly before it was written. This is one of those factoids that show up in program notes and the like, but the young Trio Bohemo gives the sentiment full voice in this remarkable performance of the piece. There is no shortage of recordings of this work nor of Schuberts Piano Trio in E flat major, D. 929, that joins it on the program (although the pairing is somewhat unusual). However, the Smetana, especially, is an extraordinary standout, right from the highly operatic treatment of the opening material from cellist Kristina Vocetkova. The second subject in this movement and the slow movement, as a whole, are both extremely expressive, but perhaps most distinctive is the finale: tumultuous rather than assertive, pivoting on mysterious low piano notes to its second subject, offering an oasis of calm amidst stress. The Schubert Trio is closer to the norm for this work. It has a somewhat restless quality in the opening movement, but here, the Trio Bohemo shows that it is capable of straight lyricism as well. The Smetana trio is the real news here, though; it is a reading that absolutely demands attention and may indeed emerge as a classic.
