| 今年2月に発売された『コクトー三部作』のLP発売 50年以上にわたるキャリアを持つ有名なフランスのピアノ・デュオ姉妹、カティア&マリエル・ラベックが、二人にとって特別な作曲家である現代音楽の巨匠フィリップ・グラスの音楽に捧げるニュー・アルバムのLP化(3枚組)。このアメリカの作曲家がフランスの芸術家ジャン・コクトーの映画に基づき、1993年から1996年にかけて作曲したオペラ三部作です。2020年に高評価を得た歌劇『恐るべき子供たち』の録音に続き、今回残りの2作品、歌劇『オルフェ』と『美女と野獣』が収録されました。グラスの音楽監督であるマイケル・リースマンにより、カティアとマリエルのためにピアノ・デュオ版に編曲されています。 フィリップ・グラスは1964年、27歳の時に、ナディア・ブーランジェに師事するためにパリに移り住みました。この二人の出会いは若いグラスにとって決定的なものとなり、フランス文化を吸収し、その後に深い印象を残すこととなりました。フランスを愛し、フランス語を巧みに使えるようになった彼は1990年代にコクトーに捧げるオペラを書きました。 「コクトーの三部作に取りかかった時、私の作品に最初に影響を与えたアイデアは3つの映画の根底にあるテーマを引き出すことでした。それらは相対するものが一組となり、はっきりと表現されています。1つ目が生死と創造性、そして2つ目が普通の世界と変容、魔法の世界です。これらのテーマは3作品すべての中心にあり、映画の中で提示されています。……一人の人間の変容、つまり全体の人々や社会ではなく、一人の人間の道徳的で個人的なジレンマを中心に進められています。これに伴って、魔法と芸術が普通の世界を超越の世界に変えるためにどう使用されるのかということがあります。これらのコクトーの映画の3作品には創造性と創造的プロセスに関する議論、描写および教訓があるのです」――フィリップ・グラス ユニバーサル・ミュージック/IMS |

| Philip Glass three operas based on films by Jean Cocteau, inspired by the composers youthful experiences in Paris, are among his most variegated works and perhaps among the ones most likely to win over those unpersuaded by the composer. This release took shape as Katia and Marielle Labeque performed concerts devoted to two-piano arrangements of numbers from these operas in 2020 and 2023; the arrangements are by Glass colleague Michael Riesman. Many recordings of Glass have come from his own orbit, but this one, released by the Deutsche Grammophon label and a presence on classical best-seller charts in early 2024, shows the value in opening up the field. The Labeques bring a fluent but lively quality to the music that illuminates the material out of which the operas are woven. Sample the ragtime-like opening, "Le cafe," from Act I at the beginning. Elsewhere, one hears echoes of Gluck, Bach, and more, all superimposed on Glass characteristic repeating patterns. The durable popularity of Katia and Marielle Labeque, still at the top of the duo piano heap, is remarkable, and it has occurred in part because the sisters are unafraid to take on new repertory.
