| Composer Nikolai Kapustin is not yet a household name but is becoming more popular thanks to the efforts of his Western champion, pianist Frank Dupree. This 2024 Capriccio release made classical best-seller lists in the late autumn of that year, and it offers large and small pieces and is, in general, a good place to start with Kapustin. The composer has been called the Russian Gershwin (he was actually of Ukrainian origin). He demurred when asked if he considers his music jazz, saying that he was not an improviser and notated all his music. Of course, a great deal of jazz was notated, and the boundary between and improvisation is notoriously hard to pin down (for instance, when Schubert was writing music just about as fast as he could set it down on paper). The notation issue may be less important than the rhythms, which are squarish compared with real jazz. In any event, Kapustins music has several distinctive features that are well captured on this release, including Dupree with both the SWR Symphonieorchester and the SWR Big Band. That points to one salient feature, namely that Kapustin lasted long enough to draw on multiple eras of jazz in his music (as, indeed, Gershwin might have if he hadnt been struck down). The Piano Concerto No. 6, Op. 74, offers an excellent example, convincingly sequencing everything from 1920s popular jazz to furious post-bop. Another major feature of Kapustins piano music is just that it is technically brilliant, and Dupree and conductor Dominik Beykirch keep it moving along at a terrific clip; it is foot-tapping in the extreme. For those who havent sampled Kapustin yet, this grouping of two concertos and various smaller but no less ambitious works offers the perfect chance. ~ James Manheim |
