| On her first new work in five years Jenny Scheinman presents a wild and expansive double album inspired by Northern Californias Lost Coast. The violinist and composer was a staple of New Yorks vibrant jazz scene in the 2000s before finding her way back home to Humboldt County in the next decade. Since then, she has found a regular home on the Royal Potato Family roster, leading her own projects and working frequently with drummer Allison Miller, who was co-billed on Scheinmans last album, Parlour Game. All Species Parade reunites several of her core collaborators including Carmen Staaf (piano), Tony Scherr (bass), and Kenny Wollesen (drums), adding to this mix a trio of exceptional guitar innovators in Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, and Nels Cline. Its a mighty ensemble and the resulting collection is as exciting as you might expect. The region of rocky, undeveloped coastline that inspired this homage may be a temperamental earthquake zone, but Scheinman and her band squeeze a lot of fizzing, rapturous life out of it. Openers "Ornette Goes Home" and "Every Bear That Ever Was" are delightful romps, the latter offering a sneaky, Mancini-inspired moodscape to set the tone and establish the bands bottomless chops. The more pastoral "House of Flowers" and "With Sea Lions" evoke wind-rustled grass rolling down into the endless Pacific blue. Nestled in the albums center is an ambitious trio of songs built to resemble one of Duke Ellingtons classic suites. Within this 20-minute set-within-a-set is the languorous "Jaroujiji," with its meandering Lage arpeggios, and the Staaf showpiece "The Sea Also Rises." The suite concludes with the slow-funk title track, a surprisingly spacious arena for Frisell to play in. Later, both Frisell and Cline let loose on "The Cape," a frothing surf-rocker that adds yet another stylistic shift to the affair. All Species Parade closes with "Nocturne for 2020," a sensuous. 11-minute journey that seems to dance with the tide. Uniquely, its one of Scheinmans most developed and orchestrated collections and yet none of the players feel hemmed in. Everyone, herself included, gets a chance to stretch out and explore, all in service of the compositions. ~ Timothy Monger |
