| Across the globe and throughout time, one of peoples responses to social change, positive or negative, has been to lace up some boogie shoes, get out of the house, and go dancing. Soundways 2024 collection Ayo Ke Disco: Boogie, Pop & Funk from the South China Sea (1974-88) takes a look at the dance music that sprung up in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines during a time when repressive regimes were turning over and people felt a little freer to go out and have some fun. Inspired by disco, funk, and good-time R&B from America, the artists herein give these related forms a colorful and inspired reworking that incorporates traditional instruments and melodies as well as working in the kind of political concerns that still hung over the recovering nations and their populations. Chosen by Soundways general manager, Alice Whittington, the songs range from cop-show funk (Fatimah Razaks "Dahaga") and loose-limbed KC & the Sunshine Band-inspired disco (Marini & the Steps "Kuingin Dekatmu") to late-80s synth funk that comes complete with vocoders (the Rollies "Disco") and slinky Bollywood disco-adjacent grooves (Pongsri Woranuchs "Aew...Phu Chai"). The artists certainly derive inspiration from familiar sources, but they take enough liberties with production and instrumentation to rise above coming off as mere copycats. Only a couple of tracks stick a little too closely to established disco templates to be super interesting -- like Tian Nius limpid late-night boogie "Deng Ni Zai Yu Zhong" or John Philips & the Steps by-the-numbers floor-filler "Ayo Ke Disco" -- but even those songs are put across nicely thanks to the passion of the singers and the ingratiating hooks. The best tracks are those that stray furthest from the norm, like Regalados "Pinoy Funk," where the legendary Filipino drummer adds tuned gongs known as kulintang to a low-down funk groove that the early Kool & the Gang would have been eager to claim as their own. Another winner is Black Brothers "Mangge Mangge," on which the Indonesian group alternate thickly funky verses with smooth-as-silk disco bridges, then top it off with some nasty guitar soloing. Its hard not to feel like this collection, excellent as it may be, is merely scratching the surface and that there are all kinds of funk, disco, and post-disco gems lurking throughout the region just waiting to be rediscovered. Think of it as a shallow, yet invigorating, dive into the shallow end of a much deeper pool. ~ Tim Sendra |
