| Countertenor Philippe Jaroussky continues his colonization of non-countertenor repertory with this release, recorded in February 2020 and shelved during COVID-19 chaos until late 2024. Whether the delay was due to hesitation on the part of Erato label personnel remains to be seen, for Jaroussky is one of the most marketable names in their stable. Its not the best of Jarousskys Romantic song releases, but as usual with this remarkable artist there are some spine-chilling moments. One comes right at the beginning, in the semi-sacred Litanei auf das Fest aller Seelen, D. 343. In his middle register, Jaroussky remains able to produce a sound of uncanny beauty, really unlike that of anyone else. The key here is that he picks songs that play to his strengths, whether they be repertory standards or lesser-known items. Hes excellent in a song like the so-called Mignons Lied or Lied der Mignon (Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt), D. 877/4, where he has the chops to create an elevated kind of melancholy. In a bouncier number like the well-known Die Forelle, D. 550 ("The Trout"), hes on less solid ground, with a rather affected perkiness. But he essays relatively few of these. Mileage may vary, and it seems likely that hardcore Jaroussky fans will find much to love here. Those wanting to sample his 19th century experiments might start instead with his recordings of French material, but this one may also draw listeners. Added attractions are the sensitive accompanimental work of pianist Jerome Ducros, and the studio sound from Erato, enhancing the uncanny intimate quality of Jarousskys voice in this medium.
