| Instrumental dances have existed in all times and places, but the beginnings of independent instrumental music in European culture date to a specific time, in Italy and France, soon followed by Germany, in the early 17th century. Around this time, composers began to create instrumental versions of polyphonic songs -- canzonas in Italian, chansons in French -- and then depart from them to create independent works. A typical music history text will make mention of this development, but for those wanting to experience the first steps in the process firsthand, the ensemble Flute Alors! (the name is a pun on the French expression "Zut alors!") is here to provide it. The focus is on a collection called Scherzi forastieri by the little-known organist and composer Giovanni Antonio Cangiasi, who adapted secular song models to keyboard polyphony. The recorder quartet of Flute Alors! is a close stand-in for the organ, as such ensembles have managed elsewhere as well. This group is mostly known for its variety of repertory, but here it essays a specialist recorder project with eminently satisfactory results. The program also includes small variation sets ("diminutions"), a madrigal played on instruments (the first step), a Fantaisie by Samuel Scheidt, and more. The focus is close enough to zoom in on the creative decisions made by composers in what was an entirely new genre, and although this release may be aimed at serious fans of the late Renaissance, theres much here to interest general listeners. ~ James Manheim |
