| アラバマ出身のR&Bシンガーソングライター、メレバ。2019年以来となるセカンド・アルバム『ザ・ブリーズ・グルー・ア・ファイア』をシークレットリー・カナディアンよりリリース。 デビュー・アルバムのリリース後、Merebaは2021年に息子を出産した。母親として、また養育者としての役割を引き受けたことで、彼女の自己認識は変化。結果、創作活動の手法や原動力も変わった。「アルバムでは、曲の多くを自分ひとりで創作することに戻った。だから、まず自分自身に戻る道を見つけようとしていた。私は何が好きなのか?何を聞きたいか?私は今、人々に何を伝えたいのか?」と『The Breeze Grew A Fire』の初期段階について、彼女は語る。この創造を助けるために、Merebaは長年のプロダクションのコラボレーターであるSam Hoffmanを起用。そのフォークロアのような暖かさに匹敵する豊かなプロダクションを共同で組み立てた。Merebaがソングライティングに目覚めたのは、フォーク・ミュージックがきっかけだった。そして、アトランタの多様な音楽シーンは、自身の芸術性を成長させ続けた。「インディー・ミュージシャンとしてアトランタの熟したアンダーグラウンド・ミュージック・シーンで育ったことは、私の旅とサウンドに大きな影響を与えた。フォーク、レゲエ、ラップ、R&Bなど、あらゆるショーに出演していた。JID、Earthgang, 6lackらと共に今も所属しているラップ集団、Spillage Villageとの関係も築いた」と彼女は語る。Merebaのデビュー・アルバム『The Jungle Is the Only Way Out』と、それに続く『AZEB EP』は、ともに批評家の絶賛を浴びながらリリースされた。リード・シングルはTiny Desk、COLORS、BET Awardsでプレイされ、世界的なカルト・フォロワーを獲得。アルバム制作の最終段階では、Stevie Wonderの指導を受け、プロデューサーとして自分の音楽をコントロールすることも勧められた。また、Dreamville Recordsのグラミー賞ノミネート・アルバム『Revenge of the Dreamers III』にも参加。HBOのヒット・シリーズ『Insecure』では、彼女の楽曲4曲がフィーチャーされている。 |

| Expressions of adoration, affirmation, and connectedness are in Merebas songs, from the singer/songwriters earliest folk-based material to her slicker alternative R&B output for major label Interscope. Theyre the basis of The Breeze Grew a Fire, the artists debut for Secretly Canadian and third album overall. Made with long-standing collaborator and fellow multi-instrumentalist/producer Sam Hoffman, the album is consummately tenderhearted, applicable to platonic and familial relationships more often than romantic ones. It exudes warmth and recognition. The first four songs are especially abundant with loving acceptance, encouragement, and support. Honeyed opener "Counterfeit" uplifts "the original -- you go, they wanna go too." "Ever Needed" and "Phone Me" respectively pledge dependability and cherish sisterhood. "White Doves" is eyelash-batting flirtation with a couple sneaky arm twists. Toward the end, "Heart of a Child" deviates somewhat, with Mereba looking inwardly while escaping with her mate to a rooftop and contemplating the passage of youth: "I remember counting days until I was wild and free/Now Im counting up the ways I could find the kid in me." Its the penultimate song and precedes the contemporary folk of "Sanctuary," which closes the set with Mereba in a reflective state of safe solitude. Leisurely rhythms throughout the LP lap like gentle waves and evoke other forms of steady motion, hinting at dancehall, Afrobeats, modern psychedelic pop, ambient techno, and even new jack swing without ever being classifiable as any of those particular styles. A few songs are sweetened subtly by Ethiopian string instruments played by Kibrom Birhane. The sounds throughout are enveloping, as comforting as a heated blanket and wholly compatible with Merebas words and caressing voice. She rarely raps, though when she does on the scuttling and longing "Hawk," its with great purpose. The title track is a spoken-word piece with insight and phrasing (e.g., "Griefs grip gets mistaken for strength and a stiff lip") worthy of any praised poet or MC. ~ Andy Kellman |
