| What Mike Leigh is to filmmaking, Richard Dawson is to songwriting. Just as Leigh crafts bittersweet but realistic portraits of ordinary British lives in movies like High Hopes, Life is Sweet, and Secrets and Lies, Dawson uses his rough-hewn fusion of rock, folk, prog, and lo-fi to tell pocket-sized tales of people whose place in life is typical, even if their problems are not. Neither man will ever be short on inspiration in this world, and after the thematically ambitious trilogy of 2020 (2019), Henki (2021), and The Ruby Cord (2022), in which Dawson explored a troubled community in the past, present, and future, 2025s End of the Middle is more intimate in both outlook and execution. The songs on End of the Middle mostly deal with the difficult interactions of families and communities, and Dawson sings of his protagonists and the drama that defines their existence with a plainspoken compassion, without trivializing their pain, from the missed opportunities of "Gondola" and the dead-end of retail therapy in "Boxing Day Sales" to the cycle of violence in "Bullies" and the disconnection of "Removals Van." Life in Dawsons world is never easy, even when it offers small emotional rewards, and End of the Middle evokes these feelings in its music as well as its lyrics. Dawson purposefully stripped down his arrangements and asked his musicians to be quiet in their default settings in order to make the dynamics all the more striking, and the blend of his acoustic guitar, Andrew Cheethams subtle percussion, and what he describes as Faye MacCalmans "clarinet bolts of lightning" deliver moments of solace along with the studies of lives quietly going wrong. Dawson manages to make music that sometimes sounds like the work of inspired amateurs, while a closer look makes clear the intelligence and imagination behind his unpolished surfaces. Those willing to meet End of the Middle on its own terms will find a powerfully moving work that turns kitchen-sink realism into something uniquely profound.
