| パーシー・グレインジャーとロナルド・スティーヴンソンは、共に民謡の発掘と紹介に情熱を注ぎ、長年にわたって文通を交わしました。スティーヴンソンは敬意をこめてグレインジャー作品の編曲を多く手がけています。このアルバムの中心となるのは「The Young Person's Solo Album 若人のソロ・アルバム」で、15曲の作品が収められています。これはグレインジャーが採譜した民謡などをアレンジした作品をもとに、スティーヴンソンが更なるアレンジを加えながらまとめたもの。曲はどれも平易に書かれており、当時あまり知られていなかったグレインジャーの音楽を紹介するのに格好の曲集となっています。最初の2曲だけはグレインジャーの編曲のままで、最も有名な『Country Gardens』が登場します。 ナクソス・ジャパン |

| Percy Grainger is often treated as a one-of-a-kind phenomenon, with an interest in folk music going beyond those of the British pastoral school. However, he influenced others, including the Scot Ronald Stevenson. The two corresponded for many years, although they never actually met (Grainger spent most of his career in the U.S.). Pianist Christopher Guilds series devoted to Stevenson, which here reaches its seventh volume, has had various interesting things in the recordings and in the booklets. The booklet here is especially recommended, and the album is worth the pursuit of physical buyers. Much of the music consists of Stevensons arrangements of Graingers work, and all the music here is receiving its first recording. It shows the close links between the two, and it is fair to say that anyone who likes Grainger will also enjoy this takeoff from him. Stevenson also contributes works of his own, which may head into somewhat more Impressionist territory. The opening part of the album is for two pianos; Guild is assisted here by Marcel Zidani, and these open up an intriguing space for the folk tunes. Sample the Irish Folksong Suite at the beginning for a bit of the flavor of these and of what Stevenson contributed on his own. Especially for Grainger fans, this could be enjoyed by almost anyone. ~ James Manheim |
