| Lawrence Harts melancholy yet euphoric blend of choppy vocal samples, clacking garage beats, and trancey melodies isnt a million miles away from the likes of Bicep, Fred again.., and past collaborator George FitzGerald. Much like those artists, hes mastered his particular style of emotional club music, and his tracks trigger feelings and memories through punchy rhythms and pitched-up samples. Come In Out of the Rain, his debut full-length after a decades worth of singles and collaborations, is threaded together with ambient interludes but otherwise gets to the heart of the matter, delivering high-velocity beats and gut-punch vocals. "NoMoreLove4u" excites with its massive, swerving bass and cuts to the core with its instantly memorable vocal hook. Other tracks, like "Closer to You" and "Out of the Rain," similarly evoke familiar moments and longing sentiments, with "Just Belong" channeling the dopamine rush of bassline house and the ecstatic drama of trance. The albums most ambitious track is "Fucking Mega," an Orbital-ish breakbeat-driven journey laced with memories of epic raves from a bygone era. "Daydreamers" backs away from the high BPMs of the other tracks, but still swells up to a teary-eyed climax. The final cut "The Wave Cry" is the longest and most developed of the albums ambient pieces, providing a wistful yet refreshing comedown before the night drifts away. Come In Out of the Rain is an emotionally direct, remarkably accomplished effort from an artist whos been brewing up his sound behind the scenes since 2015. ~ Paul Simpson |
