| This live recording of Puccinis Tosca, made over several evenings at the Auditorium of the Parco della Musica, Santa Cecilia Hall in Rome (the booklet just gives the date as 10/2024), had several features attracting wide attention even among the hundreds of recordings of this, perhaps the most popular of all the operas. The performance marked the centennial of the death of Puccini and, looking to the future, the debut of conductor Daniel Harding with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The project came off well for all concerned. One wouldnt quite say that Italian soprano Eleonora Buratto as Floria Tosca and American tenor Jonathan Tetelman as Cavaradossi are quite household names in the way that the leaders of the last generation are, but from all the evidence here, they are well on their way. Both keep the inner and outer gore of this opera evident but well under control, and both have the chops to be relaxed rather than stressed in their upper registers. The full-fledged attitude of cruelty is left to baritone Ludovic Tezier as Scarpia, the chief of police, who huffs and snarls his way through the role with no brakes. This makes for a nice balance, bringing out the wistful quality of Toscas protestations that she lived for art and for love. Harding has a fine sense of momentum, and the whole thing has an X factor wherein the performers seem moved by what they are singing. The live sound from Deutsche Grammophon is absolutely top-notch, and the album will stand up to high-quality stereo equipment. This is a volume, or at least a hard drive slice, for any Italian opera collection. The album made classical best-seller lists in the spring of 2025. ~ James Manheim |
