This 2025 release, made from live performances at the Oslo Opera House the year before, got plenty of attention and a place on classical best-seller charts. This was not just because it marked a certain milestone in the career of soprano Lise Davidsen, issued right before her pregnancy pause (it is set to end with an appearance at the Metropolitan Opera in 2026). The recording was also the first led by conductor Edward Gardner in his first appearance with the Norwegian National Opera. Lastly, Davidsen has said that she does not plan to appear on stage in Der fliegende Hollander; this is the only chance for her admirers to hear her take on the work. Norway has a certain claim to Der fliegende Hollander, for the work may have been inspired by Wagners enforced stay there after getting caught in a storm while fleeing bad debts in Latvia. The Chorus of the Norwegian National Opera brings well-characterized numbers that keep everything moving along nicely. At any rate, everything clicks here, and the energy Gardner brought to the live performances (there were several, expertly spliced) is fully reproduced. Davidsens Senta doesnt appear until the second act, and the whole thing brings a nice sense of an audience waiting for her initial appearance on stage. To say she is in fine voice doesnt cover it; there is a real chill caused by hearing her. Some may find Gerald Finley as the Dutchman to be not in the same league as Davidsen, but this is sort of the point of how things have been structured by Gardner; he is supposed to give Davidsen a solid foundation, not compete with her for the spotlight. The smaller roles are all fully inhabited. In short, this is an essential item, not only for Davidsen lovers but for Wagner opera fans in general. ~ James Manheim

ノルウェーの人気ソプラノ歌手がワーグナー作品の難役に挑んだ"一生に一度"の歌唱

ノルウェーの人気ソプラノ歌手、リセ・ダヴィッドセンが、彼女の本拠地であるオスロ歌劇場で歌ったワーグナーの歌劇『さまよえるオランダ人』のライヴ録音が発売されます。CD2枚組。2024年の夏、コンサート形式で行われたもので、ダヴィッドセンは『さまよえるオランダ人』のゼンタ役を歌いました。このゼンタという役について彼女は次のように話しています。「彼女が夢想家であり、いろいろな意味で信念を持っている人であるところが大好きです。人生における使命があり、そのためには何でもするという、私はそういう人を尊敬しています」。そして「長い間歌ってほしいと言われながら、難しすぎると考えて歌うのを延ばしていた役でした。今は他に多くのワーグナー作品の役が控えているので、この役をまた歌うことはおそらくないでしょう」と今回の歌唱が"一生に一度"となる可能性を示唆しています。このコンサートはイギリスの指揮者エドワード・ガードナーがノルウェー国立歌劇場の新しい音楽監督に就任したことを記念する公演でもありました。オランダ人役を務めたジェラルド・フィンリーもその名演技とリートのような見事な声で国際的に絶賛されました。才能あふれるキャストがそろっていたこの公演ですが、やはり中心となっていたのはダヴィッドセンでした。その演技は厳格でありながら慈愛に満ち、適した声と動作によって作品全体を通してゼンタのゆるぎない方向性をはっきりと示していました。
