| Lost for over four decades, this 1978 collaboration between Brazilian power drummer Edison Machado and Boa Nova, his New York-based sextet of Brazilian and American jazz musicians, is a holy grail of Afro-Brazilian jazz; an early example of emerging post-bop meeting the complexities of Brazilian harmony and rhythmic elasticity. Machado arrived in New York City in 1976 after the ruling military junta in Brazil made it impossible for him to remain at home. Hed been a pioneer in Rio, creating the "samba no prato" (samba on the cymbals) technique during the 50s, a revolutionary tenet in the bossa nova movement. Machado netted recording and performing work with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell, Luiz Bonfa, and Sergio Mendes, among others. He assembled Boa Nova in late 1977. The lineup included trumpeter/flugelhornist Paulo Roberto de Oliveira, tenor saxophonist Ion Muniz, baritone saxophonist Steve Sacks, pianist Mozar Terra, and bassist Ricardo dos Santos. The 79-minute, double-length set was beautifully remastered and reissued by Far Out. Opener "Porto Feliz" is a sprint, wedding Latin jazz piano ostinatos to a three-horn frontline delivering the head at bop intensity. Before Oliveira takes the first solo, Machados drumming paces Santos samba-inflamed bassline, accenting, breaking, and syncopating while remaining in the pocket. Sacks baritone solo articulates a lyric melody worthy of Gerry Mulligan. "Janeiro" uses Machados precise "attack drumming" style to fuel a hard-swinging, post-bop/bossa jam. Santos solo reveals a technical depth that supplies textural dimension. "Serena" uses airy bossa nova to channel Afro-Cuban son and modal swing. "Para Ana" revels in the nightclub sound of 60s Rio. Led by Terra, the band travels through a dreamy, pillowy, sensual Afro-Brazilian-styled ballad, underscored by Oliveiras sensual comping and Machados telegraphic, tom-tom-driven communication with Santos. "Constelac?ao" is a searing intersection of furious post-bop and fierce samba. Led by trumpet, tenor, and piano, Sacks baritone solo crisscrosses Terras furious montunos and Machados astonishing triple-time kit work that never loses the grooving spirit. If Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers ever tried to wed samba and jazz, it might have sounded like the knotty finger-popper "Ascensao." The ten-minute "Clodes" reveals the influence of Cannonball Adderleys funky, late-60s/early-70s bands. The pulsing Afro-Latin vamp meets jagged hard bop to greet Munizs modal solo; the tune then remakes itself into speculative samba under Terras expansive solo and transforms into a Moacir Santos-esque harmonic kaleidoscope as the rhythm section carries it home. Closer "Atlantico" is over 17-minutes long. It weds Eastern modes to spiritual post-bop utilizing dark minor keys and contrapuntal harmonies in an anthem of exotic texture and polyrhythms from Machado under solos by piano, trumpet, and saxophones. Simply put, this restored outing endures. It adds not only to Machados considerable reputation, but to the pioneering diversity of New York jazz during the 70s. ~ Thom Jurek |
