| The publicity for this 2025 release emphasizes how cellist Ophelie Gaillard "explores the diversity of the music and culture of Argentina." That might sound like boilerplate text, but in fact, it is accurate and points to the nature of Gaillards collection of pieces. Her program fills two CDs in its physical version and ranges from popular favorites like the famed tango La cumparsita (Uruguayan, but known elsewhere as well) to some of the more experimental sounds of Argentinas most prominent modernist composer, Alberto Ginastera, in the Punena No. 2, Op. 45. Moreover, he is represented as well by his earlier folkish style in the Pampeana No. 2, Op. 21. At the center is the enduring Astor Piazzolla, who resists any attempt at classification into pop, classical music, or anything else, and Gaillard does quite well with him. Piazzolla arranged pieces for all kinds of ensembles and would have been unfazed by the presence of a solo cello, especially when, as Gaillard does here, a complement of top-notch Argentine players was enlisted. She also brings in talented vocalists, most of all the smoky Ines Cuello in the aria Yo soy Maria from Piazzollas still-underrated opera, Maria de Buenos Aires. Gaillard may be more persuasive in the Ginastera than in the vigorous tango rhythms of Carlos Gardel, but overall, this is an adventuresome tour through the multiplicity of Argentine music. ~ James Manheim |
