| The Kanneh-Masons, nearly ten years after they first came on the scene, have become household names, even beyond their native Great Britain, and their releases consistently land on classical best-seller charts, as this one did in the spring of 2025. All the siblings are well-schooled, and one can rely on them for solid performances of repertory works. With the gloomy Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 2 in G major, Op. 126, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason freely acknowledges his debut to Mstislav Rostropovich, who was the dedicatee of or closely associated with all three of these works. He is not a clone of Rostropovich, but he gets the big, darkly emotional sound in this concerto. However, there is another Kanneh-Mason level that is beginning to develop here, and that is a manifestation of deep ensemble between the siblings. Sheku and pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason have already released a fine album together, Muse, and here, Isata really crackles in the Britten Cello Sonata in C major, Op. 65, a rarely heard piece that offers startlingly fresh takes on the neoclassic idea. Maybe shell turn out to be best as an accompaniment; hard to say at this point, but she works well in that capacity here. The siblings join in the warm Shostakovich Cello Sonata in D minor, Op. 40, part of his turn toward a more conservative language in a futile attempt to avoid antagonizing the Stalinists; the work provides a finale that lifts some of the tension from the first two works. | 2018年のデビュー盤の第1番に続き、今作ではショスタコ―ヴィチの協奏曲第2番とソナタを収録 2018年にショスタコーヴィチのチェロ協奏曲第1番を含むアルバム『インスピレーション』でデビューし、センセーションを巻き起こした、イギリス出身の人気チェリスト、シェク・カネー=メイソンの4枚目となるアルバムが発売されます。収録曲はジョン・ウィルソン指揮シンフォニア・オブ・ロンドンとのショスタコーヴィチのチェロ協奏曲第2番と、シェクの姉であるピアニスト、イサタ・カネー=メイソンとのショスタコーヴィチとブリテンのチェロ・ソナタです。 ショスタコーヴィチはチェロ協奏曲第2番を、著名なチェリスト、ムスティスラフ・ロストロポーヴィチのために作曲しました。ロストロポーヴィチは作曲家ブリテンとも親交があり、ブリテンと共に彼のソナタを1968年にデッカ・レーベルに録音しています。その録音を聴いてこの作品と"恋に落ちた"というシェクですが、今回の録音はその時と同じ、スネイプ・モルティングスで行われています。 「(このチェロ協奏曲は)私が長年愛し、研究してきた魅力的な作品です。知れば知るほど新たな発見があり、おそらくこれからもその探求は続くでしょう。そこには、音楽の中で最も美しく甘美な瞬間があると同時に、最も暗く陰鬱な瞬間もあります。それらすべてが一つの作品の中にあるからこそ非常に力強いのです」(シェク・カネー=メイソン) 2025年は初めての児童書『Little Sheku』、そして自伝『The Power of Music』の出版、さらにカネー=メイソン家による新しいファミリー・アルバムのリリースと予定が目白押しの、シェクにとって大事な一年となります。 ※180g重量盤、Gatefold仕様 ユニバーサル・ミュージック/IMS |
