The Horizons in the title of this 2025 Chandos release are perhaps those of French culture at the turn into the 20th century, with influences from Asian cultures and from a fresh, sensuous take on the classical world being picked up by composers. However, the title could also refer to the experiences of women, who were making their voices heard in larger numbers than previously. Five of the seven composers heard here are women, with several works receiving their world premieres. Many will be interested in the album simply for the chance to hear the likes of Marguerite Canal, Armande de Polignac, and Hedwige Chretien. Even better is the tightly knit program offered by mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately and pianist Edwige Herchenroder. The music is based on themes common to female and male composers, but the women seem to go in unique and personal directions. A highlight is the set of de Polignacs songs from La flute de jade, with texts from a French translation of Chinese poetry. There are also settings from this volume by Marguerite Canal, a longtime French conservatory professor, but those by de Polignac were informed by her actual travels to China, and her pieces have an unusually strong cross-cultural flavor. Likewise, one gets not only Chansons de Bilitis, with texts by a fictitious poet from Lesbos, by Debussy, but also those of Rita Strohl, which have a somewhat earthier flavor. Whately is an ideal French song interpreter, with a passionate but delicate voice, and the ideal sound environment of Potton Hall favors the accompanimental work of Herchenroder. This is an impressive release by one of the most adventurous rising voices in vocal literature, and it breaks new ground in the performance of music by women, reminding listeners that there is still a great deal of it to discover. ~ James Manheim

19世紀末から20世紀前半のパリを拠点に活躍した作曲家たちの歌曲を取り上げたアルバム。この時代のパリは、1889年の万国博覧会などを契機に地理的・文化的な関心が広がり、芸術的にも刺激に満ちた都市であるとともに、女性作曲家の活動も盛んになっていました。このアルバムでは、そうした女性作曲家の作品を中心に選曲。ピエール・ルイスによる官能的な詩に基づく「ビリティスの歌」や、中国の詩をフランツ・トゥーサンがフランス語に翻訳した「翡翠の笛」など、当時人気を博した詩を用いた作品が含まれています。カナルの「翡翠の笛」やクレティアンの3つの歌曲は、いずれも世界初録音となります。
艶のある歌声の持ち主、メゾ・ソプラノのキティ・ウェイトリーは、英国で学び、キャスリーン・フェリアー賞などを受賞後、ヴェルビエ音楽祭アカデミーに参加。2013年から2015年にかけてはBBCニュー・ジェネレーション・アーティストとして活動し、BBCプロムス出演や新作歌曲の委嘱などを行いました。ベルリン・フィルをはじめとする主要オーケストラと共演し、リサイタルやオペラなど多方面で活躍する他、「SWAP'ra」の共同設立者として、女性音楽家の支援にも力を入れています。エドウィジュ・ヘルシェンローダーは、エリック・ヴィドンヌに師事し、ロンドン王立音楽アカデミー大学院でマルコム・マルティノーらの指導を受けました。キティ・ウェイトリーや女優ドミニク・ブランと共演したシェイクスピアを題材にしたリサイタルなどでも注目を集めるだけではなく、エコールノルマル音楽院でフランス語発音や役作りの指導にもあたるなど教育の面でも活躍しています。
