| Complete with a photo of the border between East and West Berlin in the 1960s, this release by La Serenissima and director-violinist Adrian Chandler aims to explore how national styles crossed European borders in the early 18th century. One of the chief draws of the music by the historical performance group La Serenissima is that Chandler edits the music himself and is thus not restricted from performing unknown music. The main attractions are the three works by Telemann and one (plus a completed movement) by Vivaldi, but the rest of the music is quite obscure and generally of a high level. Even the Telemann pieces arent common. Telemann was the great border-crosser of the age, and he absorbed not only Italian concerto styles but also, in a straw in the wind for national flavors to come, Polish rhythms, as can clearly be heard in the finale of the Concerto for flute, recorder, strings, and continuo in E minor, TWV 52:e1. All the Telemann works are sharp and infectiously performed, and even in Venice in the 1720s, they would have counted as state of the art. The rest may or may not fit perfectly with the crossing-borders theme; the booklet notes are poorly organized, and the fact that the harmonies in Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello are well-handled does not necessarily make the music German. However, the unknown recorder sonata by Ignaz Sieber, although composed in Rome, is a nicely economical example of the French suite, in an uncommon Italian habitat. La Serenissima is its usual exuberant self, and the recorder player Tabea Debus is a standout. This is a rather miscellaneous collection, but it includes a lot of listenable and new music, and it landed on classical best-seller charts in the summer of 2025. ~ James Manheim |
