| There is a fine line between art and god-awful noise, and UNIVERSITY dont seem too concerned about observing the boundary. The British trio started out digging Metallica and Nirvana, developed an appreciation for the more esoteric side streets of math rock and noise, and after a whole lot of jamming in their practice space, have come up with a sound thats at once an amalgamation of all these influences and a frantic mongrel that has a personality of its own. On their debut album, 2025s McCartney, Itll Be OK, UNIVERSITY make it obvious theres enough precision in the bands reckless attack that this music demands to be taken seriously. But at the same time, even when theyre mired in doomstruck howling on "Hustlers Metamorphosis," exploring the prog-ish landscapes of "GTA Online," or achieving the Swiss-watch precision of "Gorilla Panic," they sound like theyre having fun. A lot of fun, in fact. The wit in the lyrics is cryptic at best, and they dont sing all that much here anyway, but this material was all recorded live off the floor, and the interplay between the musicians really makes a difference. Guitarist and lead singer Zak Bowker, bassist Ewan Barton, and drummer Joel Smith work together with a muscular energy that shows the whole is an awful lot more than the sum of the parts. Even when the music threatens to descend into a chaotic din (which happens more than once), through sheer force of will and the pleasure of turning up the amps, they never lose the plot, as the waves of sound pouring from Bowkers guitar howl eloquently while Barton and Smith call up enough rhythm to give him a solid foundation for his explorations. In the hands of plenty of other bands, this could sound calculated, but UNIVERSITY so clearly thrive on the freedom of these sounds that this feels alive and joyous in its own grubby way. If youve been wanting to hear a band make a bunch of fractured noise and love every moment of it, UNIVERSITY is here for you, and McCartney, Itll Be OK is their gift to the noise lovers of the world. ~ Mark Deming |
