商品の紹介
Mercy, Natalie Bergmans 2021 debut album, was written in a monastery as the singer/songwriter took time to grieve the deaths of her father and stepmother -- killed by a drunk driver -- and find solace and reconnect with her Christian faith. The album connected deeply with listeners for its steely vulnerability, excellent melodies, and musical settings in gospel, vintage soul, girl group-and-indie-pop, folk, and country. It earned accolades and sold well, but Bergman entered a period of writers block before becoming a mother and wife. My Home Is Not in This World remains deeply rooted in nearly mystical Christian spirituality, but its subtler, underscoring themes of love (familial, spiritual, romantic), reconciling the past, and everyday life. Bergmans brother and musical collaborator Elliot Bergman (they played together in Wild Belle and Nomo) produced the album using analog-to-tape techniques in his self-built studio in the woods outside Chicago. He plays flutes, marimba, and several other instruments; Zak Sokolow plays guitar and fiddle alongside Natalie, and the Dap-Tone rhythm section holds down the bottom end. Opener "Lonely Road" is adorned with guitars, Sokolows overdubbed fiddles, and organ, bass, marimba, and a trap kit buoy Bergman as she sings, "Ill take the lonely road/If I cant have you…", offering devotion and commitment in the aftermath of a dispute with a gorgeous Baroque-esque pop melody. The single "Gunslinger" was inspired by Chicago and was rendered with a swaggering vocal. The dreamy, analog indie pop "Stop, Please Don’t Go" explores a broken relationship, while the proceeding track, "You Can Have Me," is a tender, percussion-and-bass-driven plea for her lover to give up the hollow pursuit of fame. As lilting flutes cascade through the mix, Bergman overdubs her vocals as the heartbroken protagonist somehow stands strong. The title cut combines soul and R&B in a shuffling gospel groove with lyrics that sear. "Looking for You" extends the R&B in waltz time with breathtaking lyrical openness. "Ill Be There for You" weds indie pop and Northern soul inside an infectious 70s-styled pop/rock melody. "Arthur," the sets second-to-last cut, is an intimate, Americana-styled paean to her child. Amid fingerpicked guitars, bass, layered vocal harmonies, and flutes, Bergman reveals that he ended her writers block by arriving at just the right time. His life adds depth, dimension, and meaning to hers as she states plainly in the refrain "you gave me reason… you have given me sweet love again…." as she recounts grief and the toll it took on her heart -- and inspiration -- before the redemption of childbirth. My Home Is Not in This World exponentially extends the contribution Bergman made with Mercy. Her deep vulnerable songs are carried in glorious yet relatively simple melodies that are led to profundity by her singing and Elliots holistic, near-symbiotic production. The analog-to-tape technique adds the necessary warmth and dimension to stand apart from facile digital sounds. This is a true gem. ~ Thom Jurek
