| A Dawning marks the collaboration between Icelandic neo-classical composer Olafur Arnalds and Irish singer/songwriter Eoin French, aka Talos. The two met when they both performed at a festival in Cork in 2023, and they soon began writing songs together. While visiting Arnalds studio in Reykjavik, French fell sick and had to stay at a hospital for several weeks. When French was able to return to Ireland, Arnalds visited him at home in order to work on the album. French passed away in August of 2024, leaving Arnalds to add orchestral arrangements and choral vocals to some of the songs, and finish the record. Even without knowing all of this context, the album unmistakably has a somber, fragile tone, and its lyrics and song titles often acknowledge that there isnt much time left. Following the spoken intro "Shared Time," "Signs" is a drifty, atmospheric piece with slow, murky kick drums and submerged pianos, with Frenchs delicate voice questioning his own words and actions, ending with the phrase "I break at the pieces." Arnalds wife, Sandrayati, contributes additional vocals during "Bedrock," and the combination of her voice and the strings and synths elevates the song to a higher emotional level. The ambient, interlude-like "west cork, 12 feb" buries a sliver of a sung folk melody under raindrop-like pianos, while the folk ballad "A Dawning" is much more openhearted, eventually swelling up with symphonic strings. "We Didnt Know We Were Ready" pretty much says it all in the title, poignantly reflecting on mortality and the preciousness of life, calling on a choir consisting of Niamh Regan and Ye Vagabonds to drive the point home. ~ Paul Simpson |
