| In the early 80s when the price of monophonic synthesizers dropped to roughly equal that of a guitar and amp, many young people turned to making synth pop as a way to express their alienation, dig deeply into gloominess, or even sometimes, to have fun. The have been quite a few compilations of these early synth pop bands, 2025s All the Young Droids: Junkshop Synth Pop 1978 - 1985 is one of the best. It steers clear of familiar artists and takes in a wide variety of artists over the course of two CDs. As one might expect, many of the artists included are textbook synth pop -- angularly sung vocals, tintype drum machines, burbling sequencers, and hooky one-finger melody lines. Designs "Premonition" and Visions "Lucifers Friend" are perfect examples and sound as good as anything Soft Cell or OMD were making at the time. Another point of influence is Suicide; their violently melodic sound showing up on Richard Bones Alien Girl." Other songs are punk, only with synths added for effect. Harry Kakoullis excellent "Im on a Rocket" is the cream of that crop; its hard to figure out why this song wasnt a big hit in 1980. Its not all punky though, artists like John Howard ("I Tune Into You") and Die Marianas ("Fred from Jupiter") were good examples of soft rock crossover in the first case, giddy new wave in the latter. Fittingly, quite a few of the artists sing about technology, computers in particular. The Goo-Qs "Im a Computer" hits the nail square on the head with its bopping beats, synthesized voices, and a retro-future feel that has echoes of Joe Meek in the production. Gerry & the Holograms self-titled track is another gem in this vein. Its impossible to get to the end of the compilation and not be blown away both by the skill of the artists working with the shiny and new, yet still limited, technology, and their knack for hooks that makes almost every song comes across like an alternate world hit. Incandescent Luminaires urgent "Famous Names"; Selwin Images "The Unknown"; Alastair Riddells "Do You Read Me?"; Peta Lily and Michael Processs feminist anthem "I Am a Time Bomb"; these are all instant classics that deserved better than they got at the time and definitely need to be heard now. Thanks to Phillip Kings brilliant curation and Night School Records sponsorship these songs and all the others finally get a chance to shine in all their quirky, twitchy, and catchy goodness. Anyone looking to burrow below the surface sheen of synth po to discover some amazing DIY and offbeat examples of just how exciting the genre could be need look no farther than this essential collection. ~ TIm Sendra |
