商品の紹介
Part band, part conceptual art project, Detroit collective the Armed are always toying with where the line between the two falls. On their earliest recordings, they presented a screamy, violent post-hardcore sound, which became all the stranger when electronic elements and unexpected melodic turns started being integrated into their sound. Their aptly named 2021 album Ultrapop still had its fair share of yowling vocals and blasting drums, but it also included far more pop than made sense for anything that close to hardcore, and its 2023 follow-up, Perfect Saviors, drew even closer to atmospheric indie beauty. This iconoclastic sensibility made those albums bizarrely fascinating, with every song feeling purposefully misaligned with all the rest. Though the group’s volatile spirit could be felt in even their most reigned-in tracks, their sixth full-length, The Future Is Here and Everything Needs to Be Destroyed, revels in chaos, volume, and aggression. The first several tracks are a non-stop onslaught, with “Well Made Play” erupting in a storm of distorted synths, melodically overblown guitars, Tony Wolksi’s howling vocals, and interjections of skronky sax. "Purity Drag" aims for structure and hooks but coats everything in a redlined intensity that vanquishes any subtleties. The unhinged saxophone shows up on several tracks, adding a John Zorn/Naked City-like feel to moments like "A More Perfect Design." Its not until the albums midway point that the tension eases up a little bit with "Sharp Teeth," a song with a singsongy, girl group-like melody that repeats in its verses but gets quickly dismantled by maxed-out electro-punk choruses. From there, the Armed explore the noise-drenched take on early-2000s indie that they got into on their last few albums, with "Local Millionaire" moving between explosive screams and passages of cool crooning reminiscent of mid-period Strokes or TV on the Radio. "Heathen" almost gets to a place of darkly dreamy shoegaze haze but holds the same smoldering, confrontational energy of the rest of the album, even with its slower tempo. With The Future Is Here and Everything Needs to Be Destroyed, the Armed gleefully close the door on whatever shreds of accessibility they dallied with on their last few albums before it, but this unrelenting barrage of excitement and glorious confusion is a welcome replacement. ~ Fred Thomas
