| As the 1960s ended, psychedelia in the U.K. came to a crashing halt as groups followed the Beatles lead and got back to basics, discarding frippery and exploration to focus on more straightforward, rootsier styles. While this major sea change was going on, the mainstream pop producers and songsmiths kept cranking out bubbly, radio-friendly tunes that occasionally became hits but also served to soundtrack the era. Chip Shop Pop: The Sound of Denmark Street 1970-1975 is a wonderfully conceived, brilliantly executed collection of some of the best of these songs. Aces in-house chronicler of the nooks and crannies of pop music, Bob Stanley, pulled together a selection that shows off the work of some of the major producers and songwriting teams at their best. The artists themselves have mostly been lost to time, seeing as they were often interchangeable outlets for the work of behind-the-scenes wizards like John Carter, Tony Macauley, Roger Cook, Tony Rivers, and Gill Shakespeare. Between them they cooked up a sound that relied on a strong lead vocal, lush vocal harmonies, swelling strings, the occasional blast of a horn section, and a surprisingly robust rhythm section. Touchstones are the Four Seasons and Beach Boys, along with British groups like the Hollies and Marmalade; the songs are achingly romantic, smoother than silk, and at their best, breathtaking. Maybe not earth-shattering or epochal, but damn good and surprisingly full of upholstered soul. Currant Krazes "Lady Pearl" and Scorched Earths "On the Run" both take loads of inspiration from the desperate and pleading side of the the Four Tops, for example. Other tunes are pure pop delights -- like Tony Burrows sweet "Melanie Makes Me Smile," White Plains "Every Little Move She Makes," and Kincades "Dreams Are Ten a Penny" -- or they dip into sticky bubblegum territory (Scarecrows "I Want to Be Where You Are"), embrace melodrama in a big way (Bitter Almonds "In the Morning"), update girl group sounds (Janie & the Marlettes "Schoolgirl Notion"), and jump on the mid-70s oldies bandwagon with both feet (Shortys "Its Getting Sweeter All the Time"). One song is even a big hit -- the Fortunes gloriously melancholy "Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again" -- and another is sure to be a favorite of all Del Shannon fans who might stumble onto the set. Thats Liberty Helms incredibly good "I Need Your Everlasting Love," a massively hooky, passionately delivered song that typifies the blend of pathos, melody, wit, and heart that the songwriters, producers, and vocalists delivered so effortlessly. Chip Shop Pop is an almost-perfect compilation that does exactly what a good one should: it fills in a gap that hadnt been filled before, and it does it in a well-researched, wonderfully stylish manner. Very Bob Stanley, in other words, and absolutely essential for anyone who loves -- or wants to learn more about -- this unjustly obscure and unloved era of U.K. pop. ~ Tim Sendra |
