| After a productive run of albums for Erol Alkans Phantasy Sound and Mute, Daniel Avery surfaced on Domino in 2025, first as part of Demise of Love, an industrial-inspired alternative dance project in conjunction with James Greenwood (Ghost Culture) and Sydney Minsky-Sargeant (Working Mens Club). The record was mixed by Alan Moulder, famed for his work with Nine Inch Nails and the Smashing Pumpkins, and it revisited the type of hard-edged 90s alternative style that soundtracked the artists formative years. Averys first full-length for Domino, Tremor, continues exploring these roots, along with fellow mixing engineer David Wrench (FKA twigs, Caribou, Erasure). Though he hinted at shoegaze-like textures on his first album, 2013s Drone Logic, here he fully dives into more atmospheric songcraft, while still retaining a base in clubby electronic music production, even if these arent straightforward club tracks. Several guests from various alt-pop, indie rock, and punk spheres help Avery out, giving each song a distinct personality while fitting in with the albums hazy, after-hours vibe. After the glacial, cinematic ambient intro, Cecile Believe processes bittersweet feelings over the slow-rolling pulsations of "Rapture in Blue." "Haze" is a dead ringer for Curve-style industrial noise-pop, with churning guitars and scowling synths backing Ellie Rowsells sweet, strong vocals. The track segues seamlessly into the acid-stained downtempo industrial pop of "A Silent Shadow," featuring bdrmm. The magnificent "New Life" places yune pinkus caramel-like vocals over crashing Amen breaks and gorgeous synth vistas. Alison Mosshart of the Kills adds an extra snarl to the harsh and sinister "Greasy Off the Racing Line." The gorgeous dream pop tune "The Ghost of Her Smile" (with Julie Dawson of NewDad) starts out gentle before drowning in a noisy gale of guitars. The slow, crushing breaks of the yeule-featuring "Disturb Me" tap into the same dark trip-hop energy as certain tracks from Evangelic Girl Is a Gun. Walter Schreifels of Quicksand and Rival Schools guests on "In Keeping (Soon Well Be Dust)," which has the albums heaviest shoegaze guitars, but also pauses for reflective moments, particularly focusing on the lyric "its only raining in your mind." With Tremor, Avery establishes a singular form of distortion-doused electronic rock which dwells in a nocturnal landscape, letting deep-seated emotions rise to the surface. ~ Paul Simpson |
