| While building new arrangements for the 2025 theater production Hamlet Hail to the Thief, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke dug into the archives for live recordings of songs from the bands politically charged return to guitars, 2003s Hail to the Thief. "Shocked" by the intensity of those performances, Yorke and the band decided to officially release these selections, captured between 2003 and 2009 in London, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, and Dublin. Mixed by Ben Baptie and mastered by Matt Colton, Hail to the Thief (Live Recordings 2003-2009) is an energized, visceral reimagining of the original album, with the urgency of the bands performances and Yorkes uninhibited live vocals elevating these songs into a brand-new beast. "Backdrifts" and "A Punchup at a Wedding" are noticeably absent, but everything else follows the original track listing. Somehow managing to amplify the already unbearable paranoia and dread, these dozen tracks ferociously careen from frenzied fury (the ends of "2+2=5" and "Sit Down. Stand Up") to breathless urgency ("Where I End and You Begin," "Myxomatosis") to haunted paranoia ("The Gloaming," "We Suck Young Blood"). Even by itself, the glorious highlight "There, There" -- the audiences pure joy and excitement practically leap from the speakers -- is enough to warrant checking this out. For any critics who complained that Hail to the Thief was just too long, bloated, and disjointed, this is the course correction thatll give that album the justice it has always deserved. Yet another reminder of their power and prowess as a live entity, Hail to the Thief (Live Recordings 2003-2009) is a stunning addition to the Radiohead catalog that most fans didnt realize they needed. ~ Neil Z. | 音楽史に刻まれた圧巻のライブが、2025年に再び鳴り響く。 ライブ・アルバム『Hail To the Thief - Live Recordings 2003-2009』をリリース!! 本作はレディオヘッドが6作目のスタジオ・アルバム『Hail To The Thief』を改めて見つめ直すきっかけとなったライブ・アルバムであり、2003年から2009年にかけてロンドン、アムステルダム、ブエノスアイレス、ダブリンで行われたライブ・パフォーマンスが収録されている。ミックスはベン・バプティ(アデル、ザ・ストロークス、U2)、マスタリングはマット・コルトン(エイフェックス・ツイン、アークティック・モンキーズ、オジー・オズボーン)が手掛けた。 トム・ヨークは『Hail To The Thief』の楽曲を再構築したスコアを用い、シェイクスピア『Hamlet』を熱狂的にアレンジした舞台作品『Hamlet Hail To The Thief』を共同制作した際に当時のライブ音源を聴き、本作をリリースするに至ったという。 この作品は、2003年作『Hail To The Thief』の楽曲を再構築したスコアを用い、シェイクスピア『Hamlet』を熱狂的にアレンジしたもの。Rolling Stone UKはこの舞台を「ヨークと共作者たちの手腕を何よりもはっきりと示しているのは、この二つの世界がまるで最初から一つだったかのように自然に融合していることだ」と評している。 シェイクスピア『Hamlet』/『Hail To The Thief』の舞台作品のアレンジをどう組み立てるか考える過程で、当時のライブ音源を聴かせてもらうよう頼んだ。そこで耳にした、演奏に宿るエネルギーに衝撃を受け、ほとんど自分たちだと認識できなかった。それが次の一歩を見つける助けになり、これらのライブ録音をミックスしてリリースすることを決めた(自分たちだけで抱えておくなんて正気の沙汰じゃない)。すべてがとてもカタルシスなプロセスだった。ぜひ楽しんでほしい。 - トム・ヨーク |
