| Even when she was on a major label, Leikeli47s music reflected her creative independence. The balaclava she wore while making her ambitious Beauty Trilogy, an odyssey that began with Wash & Set and ended with Shape Up, marked her as an outsider, putting the focus on her inventive bars and the omnivorously creative productions surrounding them. For Promotional Use Only, her first album on her own label, Acrylic, strips away the mask. Where the Beauty Trilogy touched on how the external shapes the internal, this album comes from deep within, reintroducing Leikeli47 with a leaner, harder-hitting sound thats a stark departure from the vibrant maximalism of Wash & Set, Acrylic, and Shape Up. The carved-out production lets her voice and rapid-fire flow loom large. "Stay mad/I aint never lettin up," she spits on "450" over taut beats and bone-shaking bass that ratchet up tension through hypnotic repetition. On "Stellas Groove," she sounds just as formidable when she namechecks the Hammer dance as when she raps, "I got a lot of heart/What I dont have is a lot of feelings." Leikeli47s vocals may sound massive against these stripped-down backdrops, but so do the voices around her. The smoothly empowering harmonies that lift her up on "Queen" and the spirited call-and-response chants echoing her on "Different Person/Lei Keli Ft. 47" suggest an army at her back, widening her lens and emphasizing the reinvention at the heart of For Promotional Use Only. Fortunately, she doesnt leave her past behind entirely. Ball culture and house music influences remain vital to her music, and on songs such as the intimidatingly sexy "Soft Serve" and swaggering standout "Starlight," she still uses them better than anyone. On these songs and "Famous," a skeletal countdown that blooms into silken R&B, Leikeli distills the complexities of fame and independence almost as effortlessly as she puts her own imprint on different sounds and eras. Her ease at fusing slinky jazz with unflinching recollections of generational struggle only heightens the impact of "Problems," and her wholehearted embrace of reggae -- and her faith -- makes "Sandhills" one of the biggest and best curves she throws at her listeners. And on "HNIC," she closes the album with a nod to Curtis Mayfields "Pusherman," a reminder that her rule-breaking is equally rooted in lineage and innovation. Another uncompromising statement from an artist who deserves far more attention, For Promotional Use Only reveals new layers to Leikeli47s music while keeping the audacity that makes her one of a kind. ~ Heather Phares |
